Bicycle Mechanics

cycle mechanicIf you’ve ever taken your bike to a repair shop for a serious fix, chances are you’ve encountered a bicycle mechanic. These multi-talented individuals are capable of handling all aspects of bicycle alterations, repairs and custom build jobs. Sometimes their work may be as simple as repairing or replacing a burst tire, other times it can be as complicated as doing a full inspection, quote and repair job for a bicycle that has been badly damaged in an accident or through mishandling. Indeed, there is huge variety in the life of a bike mechanic, not least because they need to be familiar with as many different makes, models and technologies as there are on the market (both new and second hand).

Bike mechanics also have a varying range of job opportunities open to them. Not only are they a necessary part of any successful bike shop, but they are also relied on for on-the-road repairs for cycling teams, shop repairs for track cyclists, and as part of the design and production team at any cycle manufacturer. Sometimes large sporting stores and department stores keep a bike mechanic on call, particularly over the Christmas period. Of course, bike mechanics need to have a good idea of the needs and wants of any cyclist (child or adult), and should be well trained through their own bike use prior to beginning work. In some areas it is possible to undertake a short-term training course in bike mechanics, other times it may be necessary instead to go through an apprenticeship of a few years. For specialist areas – such as working with a cycle team – it is not unusual for retired cyclists or up-and-coming performers to train as mechanics as a means of staying in the field.
