Some of the most common problems faced on a daily basis by cycle mechanics are actually issues that can be corrected or repaired at home. Flat tyres, for example, can quite swiftly be fixed with a repair kit and a bit of patience. There are other easy fixes that can be similarly daunting to the inexperienced but are in effect two minute jobs.
One common problem is indeterminable clicking and clunking noises. Generally this comes from loose cranks and bolts or from poor lubrication on the pedals. A quick tighten up and a bit of lube should eliminate the noises, and if it doesn’t it’s probably because other parts of the bike are dusty or need lubrication. Give the bike a good clean – in all the joints and fixtures, and lubricate any part that moves. If it’s steering that is the problem, you may have a flat tyre or you may need to tighten the crown fork, wheel axle or brake arch. Give everything in the handle bar and steering section a good tighten up and oil.
Spokes are another common issue – either because they’re out of alignment or are loose. By turning your bike upside down and spinning your wheels freely in the air you should be able to determine the exact cause of the problem. If the wheel wobbles, it’s probably because the spokes are out of place. By investing in a spoke wrench (available from bike stores), you can tighten and test each of your spokes, ensuring that you have a steady ride every time.
